Ringing in the New Year

It has been an incredibly busy and eventful last few days, but I nonetheless want to give a nod to the new year, and reflect on all that 2017 was and gave and provided. It was the year that I earned my graduate degree, becoming the first person in my family to do so. It was the year I found my voice in political activism and organizing and leadership again. And it was the year that I stretched my limits even farther than I already thought they could be stretched.

I made so many new and wonderful friends in 2017 who have taught me so much about life and existence, love and truth, and all the different ways there are to find meaning in this world.  I have been continuously astounded by the generosity of others, and feel so grateful for my old friendships that have grown deeper and new friendships that are just taking root.

To be honest, I think there were times in 2017 when I lost myself for a little bit, stretched myself too thin, and wasn’t always true to myself. But ultimately it was the people around me who helped to ground me again, and for that, I am deeply thankful.

I’ve never much been into new year’s resolutions, but I do like to have goals, and I like the start of the new year as a symbolic point to begin a new chapter. So for 2018, I’m aiming for the following:

  • Finish revamping my website
  • Travel to new places
  • Nurture friendships and relationships
  • Play more music
  • Create more artwork
  • Make a new film
  • Learn to ski
  • Go backpacking

As always happens, this list will grow. I’ll think of new things to add on, accomplish some goals, and others will fall by the wayside, but I truly do believe in the power of envisioning where you want to be, as a way to get there. The last couple years, I haven’t been as clear about my personal goals, so this year I hope to refresh that again, using this as a starting point.

So let’s see where this goes! To all who made my 2017 so wonderful, who guided me, listened to me, taught me, and sometimes were just there for me: thank you, truly, from the bottom of my heart.

I cannot wait to see what 2018 holds in store, and to share it with you!
